About Our Teachers

Sekijun Karen Sunna

Sekijun Karen Sunna's involvement with MZMC dates back to its beginnings. In 1972 she helped found the organization, which was formed in order to bring a Japanese Zen teacher, Dainin Katagiri Roshi, to the Twin Cities area to teach. Sunna studied with Katagiri until his death in 1990. She was ordained in 1980 and received Dharma transmission (permission to teach Zen independently) in 1989, becoming head teacher at the Zen Center in September, 1996. Sunna received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1973.
